How to Be Rich Like Batman
Hal-Con's Director of Finance, Nola Lamoureux Spierenburg, will emerge from the cozy confines of her Batcave once again to help you learn how to be rich like Batman (or at least save some taxes).

Like Alfred taught Bruce Wayne, Nola and co. will show you what types of deductions Batman and other self-employed people are eligible for, as well as other personal financial topics, like how to improve your credit score (because we can't all have Bruce Wayne's bank account). And she'll be there to answer your questions, at least about accounting and financial topics.

War of the Worlds

Orson Welles caused a nationwide panic with his broadcast of “War of the Worlds”—a realistic radio dramatization of a Martian invasion of Earth.

At the ago of 23, when Welles' Theater company adapted H.G. Wells’ 19th-century science fiction novel War of the Worlds for national radio, he did not plan it as a radio hoax, nor did he realize the havoc it would cause.

For one night only, Halifax’s own Eastern Front Theatre will recreate the infamous broadcast in it’s entirety.  Eight actors will perform the original script in full, complete with live sound effects and music, taking you back to the CBS studios that very night.

Tickets for the event are $20 and are available online, in advance, from tickethalifax.com.

Zombies ARE the New Vampires! What comes next?
In the 17th century, reports of fetid, undead vampires swept through Europe. Through fiction and film, vampires evolved into the sexy and omnipotent creatures we are familiar with today.

Are zombies undergoing a similar evolution? And how did such repulsive creatures, arguably the most repulsive monsters, gain such popularity? In this panel we will look at the origins of zombies, from revenants and art in the middle ages, to the voodoo connection, and the influence of film, fiction, music and games. Thanks to modern media, zombies interact with humans, fall in love, and can even be superheroes. And in many ways, the zombie also speaks to our growing fears of contagion and the apocalypse.

Zombies now pervade many aspects of our society – there are zombie walks throughout the world, zombie-themed running races, paint gun games pitting humans against zombies, and more. The zombie has supplanted the vampire but its popularity has almost peaked. So what comes next? This will be up for general discussion during the panel.

New Media: From Page to Stage to Screen
With the high-profile release of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, J. K. Rowling's opus to wizardry makes the jump from novel to the stage. Fan-favorite shows like Buffy, Angel, and Charmed found new life in official, canonical comic book series. What does this mean going forward? How will this affect existing models like tie-in media, where canonicity is often debatable and can change on a whim? Consider the Star Wars EU -- previously canon(-ish) but now become the explicitly non-canon Legends materials.

This panel will examine the benefits and flaws in changing to a new medium, the differences between official and extended canon and how they can be perceived by fans, and the relationships between continuations, tie-ins, and adaptations. It will include short readings from Harry Potter and the Cursed Child.

As I have the previous 2 years, I would like to facilitate an open discussion of A Song of Ice and Fire/Game of Thrones, including fan theories, commiseration for characters who've passed on, differences between page and screen, speculation on what's to come, and fan-style (that is, non-academic) criticism of the material. Given the often mature content of the material, it will be left up to attendees if they wish to have younger family members in the room with them, so the discussion can go where it will.

Fair Dealing and Copyright in Canada
Canadian copyright law allows for the use of copyrighted works for specific purposes: research; private study; criticism/review and news reporting. But what about when an artist uses copyrighted works to create fan art? What about when a cosplayer generates a following on social media by replicating copyrighted works? In the latter half of the 20th century, the legal framework for the protection of fictional characters, names and appearances underwent a period of widespread change. Fictional characters, design and imagery from films, video games and comic books had previously been regarded as incapable of forming the basis of proprietary rights. Today’s intellectual property laws have become much more generous to creators of these works.  Guest speaker and lawyer Anthony Rosborough provides an overview of Canadian copyright law in this area and highlights the uncertainties and recent developments in the law as they apply to creators of fan art and cosplayers.

Please join a representative of ALIS (Artists Legal Information Society) as they discuss the legality of cosplay and copyright.

Are Graphic Novels Just a Fancy Name for Comic Books?
Many people overlook the Graphic Novel...thinking they are just comic books for geeks or kids, or just about superheroes. Graphic novels are somewhere between a book and a movie; combining story and art in a primal form of storytelling (think ancient cave paintings or hieroglyphics). Many Graphic Novels are thought-provoking books: “V for Vendetta” about life and rebellion in a fascist state, “Signal to Noise” - a director’s last movie as he dies of cancer, the Sandman series, and many others.

There are so many graphic novels available; it is easy for new and existing readers to miss finding a new favourite. In this panel we will discuss the history of graphic novels, and old and new favourites. Books discussed will include the well-known (Neil Gaiman’s Sandman series, The Walking Dead, 100 Bullets, Fables, and others), as well as lesser known gems (Courtney Crumrin series, Signal to Noise, City of Dust, The October Faction, etc). And of course, superhero books (Superman: Red Son, Catwoman: When in Rome, Kingdom Come, and others). Also anime (Tokyo Ghoul series, Vampire Hunter D, Lone Wolf and Cub, etc).
We will also discuss published and online sources of information for tracking down graphic novels.

The Fault in Disney Villains
We will be exploring the choices that Disney Villains have made in their movie, and where they could have made changes within the realm of possibility to have come out on top. What if Scar killed Simba and then got the hyenas to take his body away from the pride lands? What if Hades hadn’t endangered Megera? Why wouldn’t the wicked stepmother simply gave Snow white the poisoned apple within the castle? All of our favorite stories would have been very different if the villains made on simple change to their master plan. We all love to see the good guys win, but what if?

There are few film franchises more in tune to the pulse of filmgoers than the 007 series. What villains can exist in a modern world? What actor will earn their Licence to Kill? Will we as a movie going public still "care"? Will the character continue to evolve to a point far past Ian Fleming's original idea? We will see.

A Study in Sherlock
Since first put onto paper, Sherlock Holmes has enraptured the world to the point where many audiences forgot that he wasn't flesh and blood.  Local filmmakers Jeff Parker and Dominic Fegan and local Sherlock expert Mark Alberstat will discuss Sherlock, what inspired them to create their latest work all about this great detective, as well as their process for making this local film.  Panel will also include Dan Bray and a screening of their film Paper Thin.

Paper Thin Synopsis: While preparing for his thesis defense on Sherlock Holmes, our heroMiles Crabtree becomes distracted by a mystery unfolding in the apartment next door. He must decide whether he wants to write about a famous detective, or be one himself!
This quirky short film was produced and shot here in Halifax and has screened across North

Character Creation
The key to a good story, whether comic, movie or novel lies in having good characters driving the plot forward.  Unless you can relatre to, or at least understand, the characters, then the audience isn't a likely to connect or care about the story.

So, what makes a good character?  How do you walk the line between good and unbelievable characters?  Join comic guests Mike Rooth, Rossi Gifford and author Julie  Czerneda as they talk character creation.

Legality of Comicbook Worlds in Real Life
We all know the Fortress of Solitude, but what most people don’t realize is that the Arctic cliff face it is built into was once Crown land that Superman would have had to purchase from the Northwest Territories or Nunavut government. Comics and movies like to give Supe all of the credit, but he likely had a team (not the Justice League) helping him out, namely, a real estate agent and a lawyer. Find out exactly what goes in to buying and selling property from a team fit for Last Son of Krypton.

Magneto would have nothing over Wolverine if only James Howlett had signed a Personal
Care Directive. Find out exactly what a “living will” is and which legal document Uncle Ben
was referencing when he said “with great power comes great responsibility” (psst it’s an
Enduring Power of Attorney).

Learn about buying/selling real estate in Nova Scotia and estate planning documents like
Powers of Attorney and Wills from a group of trained professionals. You might learn how to
adult better, and if nothing else you can count how many cheesy comic book references we
squeeze into the presentation!

Neeks Unite! - Acceptance and Support in the Geek/Nerd World
Whether you are a geek, nerd or something in between we have all faced some form of ridicule for being who we are. Maybe you are the guy that likes things like magical girls and My Little Pony instead of what people deem is appropriate for a guy to like. Maybe your are a girl who would rather be a superhero than a princess and enjoys UFO's, Zombies, and action manga. Maybe you are any number of people that have been bullied, ridiculed or attacked because you like something that doesn't fit with what everyone else thinks you should like. Maybe you have been called crazy, immature, stupid or even weird.

If this is you or someone you know then you should come to this panel. We will be discussing how the world sees us and how we are being treated by society as a whole. If people fell inclined to they can share their stories but do not feel as though you have to. This Panel above all is about acceptance and support. It is about learning that you are not alone and that you should accept who you are and what you stand for and that each of us needs support at some point and that we need to be that support for each other

Accept that you are a nerd, accept that you are a geek, accept that you may be a little weird and maybe a little barmy but that does not mean you are any less amazing. So to all the Neeks out there I say be funny, be weird and above all else shine like the brilliant barmy stars you all are! Oh and stop by this panel and see what its all about!
